My first double

Post by bowonly on Tue Sep 25, 2012 9:09 pm

Well, just got back from my trip to Missouri. It wasn't as productive as I thought it would be, but I did meet with some success.

This hunt actually started a few days prior to when the kills occurred. It was Sunday 9/16 on an evening hunt I set up in a pinch point where the corner of a grown up field met up with the cove of one of the lakes on this Missouri public land. I found evidence that the deer were using this route to make there way to the oak ridge above to feed in the evening. Had seen nothing that evening until an hour before dark when I spotted 2 deer in the field. As I was 50yds inside the woods I could only kept glimpses. After 30 minutes of straining to see I finally caught sight of bone on the one of the deer's heads. What transpired over the next 30 minutes was nothing short of awe inspiring. What started out as 2 deer, before dark fell materialized into 5 different bucks. They were all out in the field sparring and tearing up saplings trying to establish the pecking order of things to come in the next month. One thing was clear, there was one buck in the bunch that did not need to spar to assert his dominance. I was feasting my eyes on one of the largest bucks I had ever seen.....he was a potential booner. Dark fell with no opportunity at any of the bucks, but that set the stage for how and where I would spend the majority of my time on this trip.

Fast forward to Thursday 9/20... I was set up on the edge of a lane that separated the grown up field I had figured the bucks were bedding in and the field that I saw all the activity on Sunday. Nothing exciting happened that morning until 10:40 am when I heard a turkey headed my way. I prepared for a shot but happened to glance over my right shoulder to see 2 does making their way down the lane. So I switched my attention to the does. I allowed the first doe to pass my position to allow for an easy 10yd shot. The sharkbite tipped arrow anchored her where she stood with a shot that sliced the top of both lungs and severed her spine. The second doe ran up the oak ridge in front of me a short distance but then stopped and stared coming back down the ridge to investigate what happened to her companion. I quickly grabbed another arrow from the quiver and when she also presented me with about a whopping 12yd shot I sent the sharbite on it's way. I heard her run through the thick underbrush a short distance and heard the unmistakable noises of her death throes. My first double with a bow....I was pumped!
