Topo help Suggestions Appreciated!

Post by Oldkey on Sun Dec 09, 2012 7:47 am

Hello, I was just curious if you all saw any area that I should be hunting. I've attached a link to both a topo, a satelite photo and the property boundery. I know this isnt public land but I still could use some help. Thanks!

Not to hijack this thread but could you also explain "Why" you chose the areas?
I have been studying topos of my area as well as Google earth and also been reading a couple of books and in a lot of cases i have seen the places that people pick but some look similar to other areas which they did not pick. I don't understand why or what makes one better than the similar looking area....Hope I am not stepping on anyones toes

Difficult question, can you shed some more info on the area.

I see what appears to be crops, what kinda crops? and some hard woods w/some pines....deer like pines - good cover. Also, see what appears to be a funneling of the woods but I can't zoom to be sure...Where are the scrapes and/or rubs - do you know?

I haven't seen any scrapes or rubs believe it or not. There are two main patches of planted pines between them is a very mall stream. Flow seems constant. There are no crops other than grass that the property owner pays to keep trimmed. If you look at the top photo, where the property line is, on the right side all the way to the top, there is a large creek, probably 20-25 feet wide and about a foot deep. Also I found today, a stand on the next property over a stand facing our property on the line at the top planted pines section. Apparently they are shooting deer on our property. His stand is at the bottom left of the planted pines at the top section, it appears he has drove his four wheeler onto the property because I saw tracks directly from where his stand is onto the section he can see from his stand.

The property owners are elderly and said they are having problems with that family trespassing on their property and acting like they own their land. I am in a position to help them with their problems and they allowed me to hunt. I've got about 8 more hunting days and I've been skunked all year. I need something. Thanks!

well if it was me:

First thing is to remove the stand if it is on the permissionable owners property. I really detest wood stands, they are a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Then post No Trespassing signs and a trail cam, the trail cam is for evidence in court that they trespassed on posted property. It needs to be posted in plain sight to be effective.

Or- you can do the signs and the camera, leave the stand up and put a manican[dummy] dressed as a hunter with a gun cut from wood to look like a gun...

The stand is actually on his own property, just facing our property. It would be impossible for him to shoot anything on his property where his stand is. I talked to the owner and explained everything I had planned for their property. They said they used to have it posted and someone pulled down the signs. I showed them that NC just went to the painting a tree purple and it signifies the same as a posted sign. They thought that was great. I felt really bad for them because while I was talking with them they almost seemed as if they were helpless. I am going to do everything I can for them. I have the personal cell phone # of our Local Game Warden and I am a Deputy as well. If I catch anyone, it will be handled. I am also trying to get them some meat, as I said before, they are elderly. I am not sure of their financial situation but I would like to help them save money if possible. At the bottom is a picture of their stand, I am standing on the property line. There is a four wheeler trail all along our property line.

Since you are a deputy, then I am sure you are familiar with the right of retrieval. one way to approach this is let them shoot the deer, then when they knock on the door - which by law they should - accompany them to the deer and get the lodown on where it was shot. If it was shot on their side then there would be a blood trail crossing the fence/line, if not then that is your road to suspicion which starts an investigation......that stand is there for a reason.......

hope this helps...

Oldkey - shoot me coordinates for your area if you have them and I'll take a look to see if we have anything here that might help you out.

I've come to realize, they are having a serious problem with trespassers.. I located 3 tree stands, two with corn under them, on the property ( Not belonging to anyone who has permission to be there).. There is also a 13 year old boy that hunts it (With Permission) who said he and his father killed 23 off of the farm 3 years ago. Lord knows how bad it really gets. I am pretty sure I know why I haven't been seeing deer.. Coordinates are 35*20'03N / 80*32'24

I bumped one walking in this morning.. This is the second time ive seen one there.. I moved my climber and attached it to a tree where I can ambush it from. I am going to hopefully be shutting off the truck at 5am and get in real early.. seems like the deer is there around 6:30

WOW.. What a day.. I think this place must be a small branch of the wild west. I decided with another failed hunt this morning I would go to the left side of the property and begin painting the boundary. I talked to the Wildlife Officer and told him about the issues. He said he would handle it and put it at the top of his to do list as they have had complaints about this one particular guy. He said he had reports of this subject killing off every deer he saw and selling the meat. He said he is sure he is not reporting most of them as required by NC Law.

As I walked down the Four Wheeler trail, I observed 4 males standing around 2 roosters tied to separate trees. I planned on encountering people today so I wore my gun and badge on my hip. I called for a uniformed Deputy to come take over as it appears to me ( and the other Deputy ) they were fighting chickens. While there, I met with the Trespasser ( who owns the property ). I asked him if those were his two stands on the property, which he replied they were. I informed him I was asked to keep people off of the property and he needs to remove his stands immediately.

After all documentation was taken for Animal controls investigation, I pulled out the GIS for property boundaries and mapped myself with GPS. The same guy said I was still on his property and I cannot paint his trees. It became another dispute, he insisted the property line was at least 200 feet further into the woods. It was not. He stated they were about to have the woods clear cut to the property line and I would know the line then. I decided I would wait for the survey crew to mark the lines and paint it in February after it is done. At the bottom is a picture of the tied up chickens. Between the 13 year old who killed 23 deer 3 years ago and that guy.. I feel sorry for the deer. They don't stand a chance.

As a precautionary measure, I would seek a civil engineering company and see what it would take to get them to do an independant survey before the other guy does, usually they are fairly reasonble.

If you can obtain a deed, if not then go to the local county assessor and get one, again, they usually have the boundaries in longitude/latitude, then ask the civil to clarify.

It helps to have your own, in the event the other guy[surveyor] got greased palms.....it has been known to happen over land issues.

Also, if he clear-cuts before the lines are understood, you will[the owners] never see any money for the wood that was[potentially] illegally cut down....

As a Deputy, you should be able to get this done fairly quickly, w/the badge and all.....

Miller is absolutely 100% right. I've seen it around here more times than I can count - a survey will often paint the picture the person paying for the survey wants. If you can get me a property description or plat (I'm not sure what the assessor up there has available on the web) I can at least recreate the boundary within a few feet. A lot of the stuff you find on the web was done on a large scale, under a big contract and may not be super accurate. Shoot me an email.... jason@apexmappingsolutions.com
