FOC & Hunting Arrow Weight Question/Help?

Post by Backwaters Bowhunter on Tue Sep 10, 2013 12:30 am

I shoot a r/d takedown longbow 45# @28". My draw is about 27-28". I shoot 3Rivers Traditional Only carbon arrows 500 spine, 31.7" end of insert to belly of nock. I have arrows set up with a 3 gpi weight tube and some set up without. The arrows are set up as follows:

w/o tube, 200gr head, 511gr total weight, 20% FOC
w/o tube, 175gr head, 486gr total weight, 17.7% FOC
w/o tube, 145gr head, 456gr total weight, 14.5% FOC

with tube, 200gr head, 606gr total weight, 16% FOC
with tube, 175gr head, 581gr total weight, 15.3% FOC
with tube, 145gr head, 551gr total weight, 12.1% FOC

I deer hunt, and I understand that a sharp broadhead and a well placed shot are the main things but I would hate to know that I would have gotten more penetration or pass throughs with a certain type of FOC & weight set up. From the folks that have experience would I be better off with a certain set up, or does it even matter? I have read some of Dr. Ashby's information and it makes sense. I am not going for speed I am going more for quietness. Any advice will be appreciated!

Your very first arrow listed will do the job. You have enough weight and plenty of FOC. That will blow thru any deer. A heavy arrow is good but there is such a thing as too heavy. You are looking for an arrow that will give you the best performance out of your bow. I would go with arrow number 1.
