Another young one for the freezer

Post by bowonly on Tue Jan 14, 2014 8:27 pm

This has been a tough year just trying to find time to hunt so my standards are out the window. I thought as you got older time away from work was supposed to be easier to come by. Anyway, I decided to take a trip to some public land in my home parish of Avoyelles and spend a few days, if nothing else, just enjoying God's creation. Got out there Tuesday afternoon and set up in what I thought was a remote area only to find 3 stands in the same area. Not only is it against the rules, it's a bit disheartening. I sat it out anyway and ended up seeing a group of 8 hen turkeys and right before dark a spike passed thru, out of range, making scrapes in the slough to the north of me. Was unsuccessful in calling him into range.

I decided to hunt the same area the following day, Wednesday, because I felt there was enough activity to warrant another sit. Morning broke cold and clear with very little wind. At first light I heard rustling in the leaves and watched a hen turkey pass with 10yds of my tree. At 8:15 I glanced over my shoulder to see legs moving thru the slough to the south of me. I picked up my binoculars and saw that it was a big doe. Out of instinct I hit the grunt call and immediately noticed legs following the doe. I hit the grunt again and saw the 2nd deer start in my direction. It was only thru my binoculars that I could even see the deer hand antlers....if you can call them that. Anyway, he was a legal deer and desparate times call for desparate measures. He made his way directly to my tree and gave me a nice 20yd broadside shot. I let the sharkbite do its work and he wobbled and fell over within 40yds. Now the freezer is full and I can relax.

Where I am at, we have a season called early bow. We can hunt 2 weeks prior to fall bow but our first deer must be a doe. I shot a doe last night. The deer ran about 60 yards and then crashed. I was lucky enough to be able to find it without following a blood trail.

Young, old, buck, doe, deer is a deer and meat is meat so congratulations to you! I would shoot a spike without batting an eye but there are Antler restrictions in most areas I hunt. I am going somewhere this weekend where there are no restrictions, just hope I see anything. Been at it for 4 weekends now and have not seen a deer. I forgot what it even feels like to see a deer in the woods.
