Public land turkey hunting

Post by Parkersdad on Mon Feb 22, 2016 10:35 am

I cannot wait for turkey season. I have been out the last three weekends scouting for deer on public land but will back off now and wait for turkey season to come in. I've only shot one turkey with a bow but not in my home state on public land. I'm hoping this will be my first year with a archery turkey on public land. Anyone else jacked up about turkey season?

I've tried bowhunting turkey on public land a few times. I did have one at 30 yards that wouldn't give me a clean shot with the bow one time, so I decided to take the shotgun. Wouldn't you know it, I called a bird in the next day, he came in to 10 yards, turned his back and fanned up. That's about as close to a "gimme" for an archery hunter as you can get. I actually had to wait for him to turn around and put his neck up to shoot him because I had the shotgun.

Every year I say I'm going to but I never do. And this year it may not happen either due to an arm injury at work 2 weeks ago (at least probably not with a bow Sad ) But if I can overcome that then hopefully this year I will finally get to it and go turkey hunting. I don't even own a turkey call or anything but hopefully I'll get one and have some beginner's luck. Good Luck to everyone going!

Look at it like this. Turkey hunting gives you more time in the woods and you may actually find a few good deer hunting areas that you never thought would be good . I use turkey hunting a lot for scouting for deer

Well the first weekend I only spent one hour in the woods. We had 40 mile-per-hour winds and you could not even hear yourself call. Hopefully this weekend will be better

I went Friday and Saturday and did not even hear a gobble. I saw one hen. It still beat being at work.

It still beats working but I have yet to hear a turkey this year on public land. That is very unusual for me. I usually hear at least eight or 10 a year. I think most of it has to do with it has been high winds and rainy on the days I was able to go.
