Wolves, love or hate?

Post by Northwoodslayer on Wed Feb 01, 2012 10:16 am

I have read the article "Wolves and Coyotes: Can they coexist in deer country?" in the March edition of Deer and Deer Hunting magazine. I wanted to know where some of you stand on this volitile issue? I know they don't affect hunters from states like Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, but we here in the northern tier of states have our hands full with them. Let's hear some of your opinions.

Here is an interesting factoid in the article "Healthy wolves living on prime deer habitat will kill and consume an average of 15 deer per wolf per year." One must also factor in that wolves are a surplus killer meaning that they kill more than they eat, how many extra deer are added to that figure? Heck, the biologists cannot give us an exact number of wolves in our area (Upper Peninsula of Michigan). I can assure you that there are more wolves than they report. I know of many hunters U.P. wide that report significant declines in their respective deer herds.

I don't love or hate them as long as their population is kept in check. They are needed to keep a balance with other species but, I do not believe they should be allowed to become a dominate species in any given area.

Put me in the HATE category for both wolves and coyotes. You can add hawks too.

Yeah, I hear you Heydeerman! I hate them. Just another fine example of government using our sportsmen's dollars to fund a project without our consent or opinion. Oh, they lie like crazy too! The pro-wolf group will tell you that they have only been around since the late 80's. They also state that the wolves wandered in from Canada as well. That is b.s. They (Michigan DNR and USFWS), introduced them up here in the late 70's. We would see this pack of wolves in the areas we hunted as they were the same areas my uncle logged in. It was funny as when we saw the wolves, there would be a DNR OR USFWS truck and biologist w/ tracking equip in that area. We asked once that sure is a big pack of wolves and their reply was those aren't wolves, they are coyotes. Well, they were the biggest coyotes we ever saw and nobody ever tracked coyotes! Yep, they were rammed down our throats. I know people who have lost cattle to them, dogs right in their own back yards, and sooner or later, it will be a child. I pray to God not! Many place here in the U.P. had good deer numbers despite the long winters but since the wolves gained a foothold, those numbers dropped significantly! I just hope we'll be able to trim thier numbers and put fear into them. Right now, they fear no man as they have been in constant contact with us with no harm done to them.
