Do much Out of State Public?

Post by SlowBow on Sat Feb 25, 2012 9:28 pm

I`ve started to venture out of State a bit more often lately. With the computer, it`s easy to find maps and do quick research into neighboring States. With Maryland getting ready to jack the license up to $95 for residents, I`m thinking that I might be spending more time in my neighboring States.

Anyone else get tired of the same old acreage and want some new scenery?

Looking to apply those tried and true scouting tactics on new ground?

Just have that wanderlust for new ground?

Most of my hunting is in the neighboring state of MS. I have a camp on a WMA in MS. It doesn't really feel like oos because it's only a couple hours from home. Next season I plan to venture farther from home & hunt some MO public land. I don't think there is anything more rewarding than to go into an unfamilar public land area scout, find deer, pick a setup, and kill a deer.

I used to drive an hour to hunt Ohio public land, but that was only to be able to hunt on Sundays. Although I'm very happy with the wma's I have available, I am planning an out of state hunt. Pine Ridge Nebraska public land Merriams. That will be a great video, kill or not.

For the past 3 years I have ventured to MO for some out of state public land hunting and have been very happy with the opportunities there.

If anyone is wanting to try their hand in Ohio I can make a solid recommendation for a deer camp in Tar Hollow State Park and Forest. An Ohio CBA chapter has been putting this on for 19 years and this season will be 20. The cost for food and lodging is $225 for the week. Hot showers and laundry available too. 16,000 acres and a couple other locations close by. I have been going for about 12 years or so. Info can be found here. www.lothac.com.

There is a good mix of trad and compound and a couple xbows every year. Plenty of good food 3 times a day. Summer cabins unless you camp in a tent or camper. Good family atmosphere. Kids are welcome.

I want to get my first deer in my backyard before entering a neighbors. Once I've accomplished that feat, the possibilities are endless! Very Happy

Not sure if you guys have been watching the news but Texas is talking serious about seceding from the Union. I know it's a stretch, but if it happens, I wonder what will happen to the public land hunts here in Texas. Most of them are Federally owned national parks. If this goes down I might be forced to hunt out of state. Of course if this really happens, finding a place to hunt might be the least of my worries.... affraid

we hunt public land in GA, SC, NC & WV regularly - meaning most of these almost every year. Love it and it is a way of life - and we have excellent hunts.
appreciate the mention of OH opportunity

Ya, I've been thinking the same thing going into the same area's and hanging stands. I told myself once I get a buck that scored I would move to new lands. But after this year having stands up and not being able to get to them I will have a stand or two in other area's. I would love to hunt out of state but it's hard keeping a good balance between family, work and hunting. Very Happy

I've been in WI, MN, MI, IA, KS, MO, NE, NC, ID, NM, CO, WY, ND, SD, that I can think of just as fast as I could type them. Possible I may have missed one or two. ALL public land, DIY. There is nothing more rewarding then tagging out on public land DIY! I also have the "what's over the next ridge" syndrome...which is a good thing for a public land hunter!

The way I have been doing it is to move to places I want to hunt and then make the whole thing a working/Hunting trip. I got stuck in NY for too long but that's life Sad

2 years hunting Maryland = hard hunting - that was '74-'75
3 years hunting Maine = Hard Hunting - that was '76-'78
3 years hunting Florida = Hard Hunting - that was '85-'88
5 years hunting New York = Easy Hunting - that was '93-97
Back to ME. for one more year = Better - that was 2010
2 seasons in Ohio (working on 2yrs now) = semi hard hunting - 2011-2012

These are the years I hunted public even though I lived in most all of these states longer than the times posted.
Maryland was crap back in those days. I lived in Deep Creek MD. and I only saw 13 deer in the 3 years that I lived there. Those folks were all about the grey squirrels and Raccoons back then and they didn't give a damn about deer Razz
