I think in this "I want in now" society, especially with the so called hunting "pros" touting and selling what you need to kill a 200" buck that people lose sight of what hunting is really about. For me, hunting is far more than the "kill." It may be an important and necessary component of hunting, but it is the least important. What is important is sharing a new hunter's kill, buck or doe, it is a trophy and an awesomw feeling. The first sliver of light on a brand new day, an owl's hoot, the crunching of a deer walking in the woods and the anticipation of what that deer is, buck or doe. The smell of fall leaves, the bite of cold on a late season hunt. These are just a fraction of what hunting means to me. Old friends sharing memories of hunts past and looking forward to new adventures. I think we as a society would do well to stop, slow down and reflect on what is truly important in our lives. It isn't the material things we work for, it is our families and our memories. This life is not a practice one as my wife reminds me. We must make the best of it for ourselves and those around us. By being participants in the web of life, to take a life, we know all to important how precious it is.

You know Northwoodslayer I had a day last season where I was in my stand, there was a huge beech tree next to me in full gold fall color. The smell of the woods as the sun warmed the earth was amazing, everything was perfect with Bob. I made a comment on a string "live from the stand" about it. I have never been so high on life, ever.

I have come into hunting late in life from a military background. The thing I like about the military was getting issued certain gear and making it work (maybe with a few civilian add ins). The dizzying array of information and choices made it difficult to wade through to what was really important. I have read voraciously and done everything I can to bring my previous knowledge into the "sport." That's when it began to dawn on me. This is a way of life, not a sport. I chose hunting for the connection to life, family, and the Lord. To narrow my choices, not get into another fad. I am loving every part of the journey, but have to combat the 'sport' mentality constantly. I was caught up for a bit in the hype and thought it would look like it does on the shows. I have since stopped watching shows and spend more time in the woods, with my kids, and with the Lord. Thanks Northwoods and Thanks Dave for the post. Uncle Bob, I could almost feel that moment. I have a few interesting book reports I hope to post before too long with some helpful info, I hope. Thanks again men. This forum has been great.
